Project: Building a brain in a dish

Life in the Lab

I use skin cells from patients suffering from motor neuron disease (MND) and turn these cells into induced pluripotent stem cells and then make them into motor neurons. I than use these lab-grown motor neurons to try find clues about what’s wrong with them in the diseased condition. This is done by using various state-of-art technologies to study how those cells function and normal and stressed condition. Because we can grow a large number of motor neurons in a dish, the other part of my project is to use those motor neurons to test potential drugs to treat MND.
